PHNOM PENH, December 28, 2011 (Cambodia Herald) Prime Minister Hun Sen said Wednesday that the government would allow talks between the Ministry of Interior and civil society on a draft NGO law to be extended until 2014 if necessary.
It was the first time that Hun Sen publicly discussed the draft law, which has been widely criticized as a tool to suppress freedom of expression.
"It's not necessary to be in a rush to approve the law," he told a graduation ceremony. "If there's no agreement, there should be more discussion about the draft NGO law until 2014."
Hun Sen said the draft "should be accepted by all (and) should not block the activities of civil society. This law is not to suppress anybody in civil society."
