PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald)—The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) will finalize its assessment over the companies which have been granted economic land concessions (ELCs), in October, as the ministry has announced to reduce the period of ELC investment to 50 years from 70-99 years, said a senior official, according to the State News Agency-AKP.

Eang Sophalleth, undersecretary of state and spokesman for MAFF, told local media that by the end of September, the ministry has inspected and assessed 118 ELC-granted companies, and as a result, licenses of 15 companies have been revoked, land areas of 12 companies have been modified, 77 companies have been allowed to continue the procedures, while 11 others have been given from three months to one year to see their progress.

According to a government report, 1,934,896 hectares of ELCs were granted to a total of 230 companies, of which 122 companies received licenses from MAFF to invest on 1,316,396 hectares of land, while 133 others got licenses from the Ministry of Environment, but 23 companies lost their licenses after failing to follow the investment contracts.
